IT Powai at Mumbai : its courses and activities .

The I.I.T Bombay( Indian Institute of Technology) is one of the six higher Institutes of technology in the country set up by then Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru in 1958, with the objective of making available facilities for higher eucation, research and training in various fields of science and technology. The Institute is located at Powai and has a campus extending over 200 hectares set amidst picturesque surroundings with the Vihar and Powai lakes on either side.

For undergraduate programs : The Joint Entrance Examination., Direct Admission of Students Abroad(DASA)
For postgraduate programs : G.A.T.E - Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering, C.E.E.D- Common Entrance Examination for Design for P.G. Programs, separate test for School of Management, and Master of Philosophy in Planning & Development.
For Ph.D studies : Candidates are admitted under the following categories:
Regular research students, sponsored candidates, self-financing candidates, candidates on study leave, project staff, research associates.

OTHER ACTIVITIES ON THE CAMPUS
IIT Bombay offers training to teachers from other Institutions to enable them to get their Master & PhD degree, under quality improvement and Faculty improvement programs. Continuing Education Programs : On an average 70 different programs are held annually in which over 1000 engineers and scientists from Industry, and Research & Development organisations participate.In -House programs are also organised for organisations.

The Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology :
The number of Indian Information Technology professionals is expected to grow beyond one and a half million within a decade. The export revenue of the Information Technology industries is expected to cross US $50 billion in this time frame. A key requirement of industry is getting an adequate number of technology leaders necessary to lead this huge work force. Recognizing this need IIT Bombay has taken the initiative in establishing a school of Information Technology that will offer world class post graduates programs leading to Ph.D, M.Tech, and PGDIIT. The R&D focus of the school will be on technology, processes, applications and products. The School will have significant interactions with all other departments and centers of the Institute. This is the first and currently the only initiative of its kind in India.

STUDENT FACILITIES:-

All students live in the student hostels on the I.I.T Powai campus.The Institute has well equipped & modern laboratories, state of the art libraries with access to computers..The students live in a pleasant and intellectually-stimulating environment conducive to the development of their personalities. The teaching methods rely on direct personal contact between the students and the teachers. A staff student ratio of 1:6 ensures close contact for monitoring the academic progress of each student.

Extra curricular activities are organised by the students gymkhana and are held primarily at the students activity center(SAC). There are excellent facilities for sports including a swimming pool, tennis courts , badminton and squash courts and a vast football field. The Institute's cultural fest Mood Indigo , is held every year in January, and is perhaps, the most popular youth festival in the country.

The facilities for cultural activities in the campus include a Classical Music Society, the Debating & Drama Club, and a Hobby Club. Three canteens are open for the students throughout the day until midnight.

SALIENT FEATURES:
Students are free to use the laboratories whenever they need to do so. Libraries are well equipped with materials.
