Healthy Kitchen Tips

  • Storing garlic in oil can lead to food poisoning.
  • Do not use water from a hot tap for cooking or drinking as hot water dissolves lead from the tap more easily.
  • Do not mix household cleaners together, the results could be toxic.
  • Poultry, meat and fish are more nutritious when they are baked, broiled, poached or steamed rather than deep-fried or sauted.
  • Always read the labels of food products and check for expiry dates.
  • When storing leftovers, it is better to pack warm food loosely in small containers.
  • Replacing kitchen sponges regularly can prevent food poisoning.
  • Thawing frozen vegetables quickly will help reduce loss of valuable nutrients.
  • Be suspicious of food advertised as cholesterol-free, it might contain fat instead.
  • Use a cutting board made of hard, non-porous wood.
  • It is better to remove the outer leaves of cabbage, spinach or lettuce, since they might contain stubborn pesticide residue.

What Ails?

Acidity - Drink coconut water 3-4 times a day. Have cucumber or watermelon every hour.

Depression - Boil 1/2 a spoon of powdered cardamom in light tea water and drink.

Diabetes - Chew 8-10 Tulsi or Curry leaves in the morning.

Cough - Mix a pinch of pure turmeric powder in a glass of warm milk and drink at night.

Earache - Mix a few drops of lime juice in 1 teaspoon of lukewarm water. Put 4 drops of this into the ear.

Gas - Apply a paste of hing (asafoetida) mixed with water on the stomach.

Headache - Crush an onion and apply the paste on the forehead.

Mouth Ulcers - Mix coconut milk with honey and massage it on your gums 3 to 4 times a day.

Throat Ache - Mix 1 teaspoon lime juice with 1 tablespoon honey. Swallow tiny amounts slowly 2-3 times a day.

Body Pain - Boil 3 tablespoons of powdered nutmeg in 1 cup sesame oil. Cool and apply on affected parts.

Fever - Apply sandalwood paste on your forehead to bring the temperature down.

Smelly Feet - Soak feet in strong tea water everyday for 20 minutes.

Lice - Grind 7 to 8 almond kernels with 1 to 2 teaspoons lime juice and apply on the hair.

Piles - Consume buttermilk after every meal.

Stomach Upset - A strong cup of unsweetened black tea is effective.

Cold - Juice of two lemons in 2 1/2 cups of boiling water sweetened with honey to be taken at bedtime.

Insect Bites - Drink 2 to 3 teaspoons coriander leaf juice mixed with one cup of water.

Heat Exhaustion - Apply some sandalwood oil on the forehead.

Cracked Feet - Massage feet with castor oil every night and wear socks.

Dandruff - Boil a handful of neem leaves in 4 teacups of water. After cooling and filtering use it for rinsing hair.

Constipation - Drink 4 glasses of water the first thing in the morning.
