Diet tips for cancer patients

* Follow a simple diet and avoid vegetable oil, salt and white sugar. Cut down on oil consumption.

* Fifty per cent of your diet should consist of whole grains - whole wheat, flour, jowar, ragi, etc. Dietary fibre in them protects against colonic prolyp and invasive cancer of the colon.

* Make moong sprouts, millet, small red beans and other germinated pulses a necessary part of your diet.

* Raw vegetables in the form of salads and clean washed green vegetables should be part of your food pattern.

* Consume 3-4 servings of fruits and vegetables everyday. They are beneficial because they contain large amounts of oxygen.

* Eat your meals slowly, chewing the food well. Eating fast could cause indigestion.

* Use only the whites of eggs to make omletes along with other vegetables.

* Eat four small meals in a day, rather than two heavy ones.

* Make breakfast a prime meal with milk, cereal and fruits.

* If you are concerned about your intake of sugar, drink more vegetable juices than fruit juices.

* Try to eat food in their natural states - not canned, frozen or tinned.

* Try to drink your tea and coffee without sugar. You might find it easier to cut down gradually.

* Drink unsweetened fruit juices and avoid soft drinks.

* Choose fresh fruit over canned fruit and natural fruit juice over syrups and sherbets.

* Cut down on sweets, chocolates, biscuits and cakes. Try natural yogurt or unsalted nuts as alternative snacks.

* Use less sugar and jaggery in cooking.

* Look at the ingredients on food labels and make sure sugar is not at the top of the list, since often ingredients are listed in order of quantity.
