With the Kala Ghoda festival which is currently on in the art district of Mumbai, one has the opportunity meet some of the versatile people. Saumen and Falguni are an young husband and wife couple who, with their in-depth understanding of painting and ceramics have exhibited their works. Falguni a Gujarati by birth is married to Saumen who is from West Bengal. This artistic duo for the last few years has been doing what they are best at.

The ceramic works done by Falguni are absolutely A ceramic figure breathtaking and have the distinguished air of being different. According to her, ''I was asked by my teacher not to try my hand at painting and stick to ceramics and I have decided to do so. It gives me the maximum satisfaction when I see these things taking shape." Falguni had initially decided to concentrate on painting for her graduation in fine arts. Her works reflect the contemporary spirit and breaks out of the traditional mode of ceramic work . Even though she experiments with her work she believes that art should be functional .

"I believe a work should be of aesthetic value as well as be of practical utility and in ceramics there is a lot of scope for combining the two. My wares are a mix of functionality and innovative designs," says Falguni. Sounds different doesn't it . Some of her creations have taken inspiration from the nature such as the jackfruit or the the lotus leaf and she also makes use of the Japanese technique Raku which gives them a very different look.

As for Saumen, he prefers doing paintings as well as Depiction of angst scluptures. It was an exhibition of Rodin that inspired him to take up fine arts as a profession. Metal sculpture is Saumen's forte and he loves creating structures in metal, fiber glass and wood. Painting also happens to be his passion and in his exhibition the works one notices the use of motifs depicting motions of the human body. The dreams of a eight year old boy has finally come true . Asked how expensive it is to to be an painter and sculpture Saumen admits, "it is very hard." But then most artists have to fight it out . With an increasing number of people taking to patronizing art, artists hopefully will find it a comfortable journey in future . So best of luck to the couple who still have miles in their road to success.
