Thane, as a city, has transformed beyond measure, says Sandeep Karnavat, joint secretary of the MCHI's Thane unit. "Its developmental pace is actually envious. Thane has global leaders in IT, vying for space in this city. It has morphed into a city of wealth creators and that is a paradigm shift," adds Karnavat.
The city is growing at a rapid pace and it is projected to have a population of 33.3 million people, by the year 2031. "Thane is a complete city. It has a flourishing commercial sector, thanks to its strategic location. Today, anyone who lives in Thane, need not commute far for work, as ample job opportunities are being created here. Moreover, for entrepreneurs and industrialists, it is the most ideal location, for development," believes Ajay Ashar, honorary secretary of the MCHI Thane.


The latest IT park shaping up in Thane's MIDC area, is likely to house 25 tall and impressive buildings, with a whopping 50 lakh sq ft of space to be occupied by world leaders in information technology, who are looking to spread their network here. All of this, is expected to come up in a year's time. This will create employment opportunities for at least 50,000 people. The city's civic amenities are also being revamped, to meet the growing demands of the progressive strides that the city is taking. Numerous flyovers, skywalks, water and road infrastructure, modes to improve connectivity and linkage, etc., have been planned. Recreation and entertainment facilities, an international convention centre, waterfront development and upgradation and beautification of the 30 lakes in Thane, are some of the measures that the authorities have planned to implement, by 2031.
About the industrial makeover of the city, Nainesh Shah, president of the MCHI (Thane), explains, "Over an extended period, traditional brick and mortar industries have been gradually replaced by IT/ITeS, logistic companies, retail malls, entertainment complexes and high-end accommodation." The city currently has around 12-13 operational malls and hyper markets, with at least five more expected to begin operations, in the coming two years. With many multiplexes, the entertainment industry also owes a lot of its revenue to Thaneites.

Top-notch fashion brands like Lifestyle, Wills, Globus, Provogue, Nike, Reebok, Satya Paul, Fabindia, Max, The Body Shop, Raymonds and many more, have changed the lifestyle of Thaneites. The 'lake city' is fast mirroring the demands of global India. This is evident from the latest 12-month outlook from real estate consulting firm, Jones Lang LaSalle India, which reveals that Marks & Spencer is leasing 22,000 sq ft (2,044 sq m) in Viva City Mall, Thane. Thane also has a worldclass hospitality segment, with a platter of Indian and international delicacies for one and all.

"The city and its environs are the stamping ground for nearly 100 developers and builders, who have bonded together under our banner to create a city that will set benchmarks for the future. Thane is also fast evolving as a central business district, with its 360 degree approach to healthcare, connectivity and linkages," maintains Shailesh Puranik, vicepresident, MCHI (Thane).
